Sabah Mulls Incentives To Encourage Public Participation In Waste Collection
KOTA KINABALU, July 21 (Bernama) --The Sabah government is considering introducing incentives, including essential household goods or cash, to encourage residents to collect rubbish as part of efforts to improve cleanliness across the state.
Assistant Minister of Local Government and Housing Datuk Fairuz Renddan said the proposal was among the ideas discussed during a recent visit to Semporna with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, particularly to address waste management issues in villages and coastal communities.
“There was a suggestion that people could exchange a basket of collected rubbish for items such as a packet of cooking oil or receive a cash incentive to help change public attitudes towards cleanliness," he said.
He was responding to a supplementary question from Calvin Chong Sin Wun (Warisan-Elopura), who proposed a payment scheme, such as RM2 for every kilogramme of rubbish collected, to encourage greater public participation, especially among young people.
Fairuz said that besides waste collection services carried out by concessionaires, the government is also working closely with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and local communities to clean up the waters around Semporna.
Earlier, in reply to a question from Jamil Hamzah (Warisan-Bugaya), he said the proposed construction of a new landfill in Semporna has reached the contractor appointment stage.
He added that continuous clean-up operations covering both land and sea, particularly the waters and coastlines of the popular tourist destination, are being actively carried out.
"These clean-up efforts are being intensified and will continue regularly to ensure that the cleanliness of our tourism areas is consistently maintained," he said.
