Melaka Polls: Khaidirah Focuses On Community Welfare, Tourism Growth In Rim
JASIN, Nov 1 (Bernama) -- Resolving long-standing local issues and unlocking the tourism and economic potential of her constituency are among the priorities of Barisan Nasional (BN) incumbent for the Rim seat, Datuk Khaidirah Abu Zahar, if re-elected in the 16th Melaka state election.
Popularly known as Dira, the 42-year-old said several longstanding complaints raised by residents had been addressed during her five years as their elected representative, particularly those involving drainage systems and flash floods in several locations.
“Alhamdulillah, over the past three years or so, I can sleep peacefully even when there is heavy rain,” she told Bernama while meeting residents in Chohong here today.
She said cooperation with local authorities and government agencies had also been strengthened to ensure regular tree pruning and community clean-up activities for residents’ safety.
The former State Deputy Investment, Industry and TVET Development Committee chairman said welfare initiatives had also focused on repairing dilapidated homes and providing allocations for urgent repairs to public facilities.
Khaidirah said she also wanted to unlock Rim’s economic potential by developing local products, enhancing residents’ skills and promoting existing tourism attractions, rather than relying solely on large-scale development projects.
“Rim has various attractions and potential, including Tasik Chinchin, scenic rivers, local food products, batik enterprises and ecotourism destinations that could be promoted through more attractive tourism packages.
“There are also trails with potential for adventure sports, while homestay programmes could be expanded to allow visitors to experience village life and attract more tourists,” she said.
The Jasin Umno division vice-chief is the daughter of the late former Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Abu Zahar Ithnin. She was previously active in the entertainment industry as an actress and television host before turning to politics.
On the election campaign, Khaidirah said would continue engaging with residents and carrying out her responsibilities as usual, despite facing a straight fight against Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Esma Eazreen Husin.
She also hoped the campaign would remain healthy and respectful, without insults, personal attacks or accusations, including among supporters on social media, to ensure a mature and harmonious contest.
Polling is on Nov 14, with early voting set for Nov 10. For updates on the state election, visit https://election.bernama.com/prn/melaka/2026/.
