IPOH, Sept 10 (Bernama) -- The Perak State Legislative Assembly today elected Perak PKR chairman Mohamad Hairul Amir Sabri as a new Senator to represent the state in the Dewan Negara.

Perak State Assembly Speaker Datuk Seri Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid announced the result after Mohamad Hairul Amir polled 33 votes, defeating Perak PAS Dewan Ulama chief Muhammad Zulkifli Muhamad Zakaria, 57, who obtained 26 votes.

The election motion was proposed by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad under Article 45(1)(a) of the Federal Constitution following a vacancy in the Dewan Negara seat previously held by Amanah vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Mujahid Yusof, whose term ended on May 24, 2026.

On behalf of the state government, Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Sandrea Ng Shy Ching (Teja assemblyman) nominated Mohamad Hairul Amir, 38, who is also chief special officer at the Tambun Parliamentary Constituency Office.

The nomination was seconded by Rural Development, Plantation, Agriculture and Food Industry Committee chairman Datuk Mohd Zolkafly Harun (Lintang assemblyman).

Meanwhile, opposition representative Manjoi assemblyman Mohd Hafez Sabri nominated Muhammad Zulkifli, which was seconded by Sungai Manik assemblyman Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharudin.

"Therefore, I announce Mohamad Hairul Amir Sabri as the elected Senator representing the Perak State Assembly.

"The name of the elected Senator will be submitted as soon as possible to the Office of the Secretary of the Senate to facilitate further appointment procedures to be managed by the Senate Secretariat of the Malaysian Parliament," Mohammad Zahir said.

The assembly sitting was then adjourned sine die.
