GPS Ready For Sarawak Election With Or Without Redelineation, Says Abang Jo
KUCHING, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is ready to face the state election with either the existing number of state seats or an increased number following the proposed redelineation exercise, its chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said.
The number of seats to be contested would not be an issue, the Sarawak Premier stressed.
“We have no problem. If there are 82 seats, then 82 seats. If there are 99 seats, then 99 seats.
“We have no problem because it may not necessarily be 99 seats if there is insufficient time for its implementation,” he said at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Regency Specialist Hospital Kuching site here today.
He said the main priority was to ensure that the state election could proceed in accordance with the stipulated provisions and timeframe, without being dependent on the outcome of the redelineation exercise.
In July last year, the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly passed the State Legislative Assembly (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025 to add 17 new seats, bringing the total number to 99.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was reported to have asked the Election Commission (EC) to prepare an updated report on the proposed redelineation exercise to increase the number of Sarawak state seats.
MADANI Government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil said the matter was raised at a recent Cabinet meeting, with the Prime Minister also expressing his commitment to implementing it.
The mandate of the Sarawak state government ends in February 2027.
