KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 (Bernama) -- Thousands of people took part in various sports, fitness and recreational activities at state-level National Sports Day (HSN) 2026 celebrations across several states today, promoting an active lifestyle among the public.

In PERAK, about 5,000 participants joined the celebration at the State Youth and Sports Complex, officiated by State Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Datuk Khairudin Abu Hanipah, representing Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad.

Activities included the 40-kilometre (km) MADANI Fun Ride, the 5 km Malaysia Aktif Fun Run and Malaysia Aktif Aerobics Variation, alongside exhibition booths, sports product sales, demonstrations and family fitness promotions.

In KELANTAN, State Secretary Datuk Dr Tengku Mohamed Faziharudean Tengku Feissal said the celebration featured various activities, including running, cycling, taekwondo and traditional sports, to encourage participation from all walks of life.

He said 2,000 registrations had been recorded for the running event that morning, while the state-level programme targeted 7,000 participants.

“Overall, Kelantan is targeting 327,000 participants for HSN programmes in the state,” he told reporters after officiating the programme today.

In TERENGGANU, about 2,000 participants took part in the HSN 2026 celebration at Mesra Mall in Kemasik, Kemaman which featured various sporting events, including the Mesra Run 2.0 themed ‘Sports and Artificial Intelligence Technology’.

The celebration was officiated by Terengganu State Federal Development director Datuk Abdul Kahar Abdul Latif and attended by Suria KLCC Sdn Bhd chief executive officer and executive director Francis Tan.

Meanwhile, in PERLIS, more than 7,000 participants took part in the state-level HSN 2026 celebration, held over two days from yesterday at the Kangar Jaya Mall compound.

Activities included the MADANI Fun Run, MADANI Fun Walk, aerodance performances, rhythmic gymnastics competitions, jump rope, step board performances and the Aerobikton Challenge Audioshow.

Perlis State Secretary Datuk Noor Azman Abdul Rahman, who officiated the celebration, said HSN served as a platform to make sports and fitness part of everyday life rather than a seasonal activity.

He also congratulated the Perlis contingents at the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) and Para SUKMA in Selangor recently, which won 17 gold, seven silver and 18 bronze medals, and 10 gold, eight silver and nine bronze medals, respectively.

In SABAH, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the state was targeting 651,610 participants in conjunction with HSN celebrations by the end of this year.

He said the programme would be expanded to the grassroots level in Tuaran and five main zones, namely Tawau, Sandakan, Beaufort, Kudat and Keningau, to encourage wider public participation.

Hajiji said the state government was also reviewing proposals for a special initiative to address pressing challenges in the state’s healthcare sector and help create a fit and active population.

“There is still much we need to do and for that, the state government will review proposals to implement a special initiative to help address the challenges of the state’s healthcare sector,” he said when officiating HSN 2026, which was attended by more than 1,000 people.
