Sabah's Diversity Is Malaysia's Strength, Says National Unity Minister

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 31 (Bernama) -- The diversity of ethnicities, languages, customs and cultures in Sabah is among the state's greatest strengths, reflecting Malaysia's multiracial fabric, said National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang.

He said Sabah is home to 35 ethnic groups and 217 sub-groups, each with its own rich languages, traditions, attire, music, dance and heritage, all of which collectively shape the state's unique identity.

"The Kadazan, Dusun, Bajau, Murut, Rungus, Bisaya, Lotud, Lundayeh and many other communities have together shaped the Sabah we know today," he said in a Facebook post in conjunction with Sabah Day today.

He said such diversity is not a barrier to harmony but rather a source of strength when communities understand, respect and accept one another.

"This diversity is Sabah's strength, and Malaysia's strength. Despite differences in language, beliefs, customs and ways of life, the people of Sabah have shown that harmony can be built when we understand, respect and accept each other," he said.

Aaron said Aug 31 holds its own significance in Sabah's historical journey, from the era of North Borneo, through the administration of the British North Borneo Company, the Japanese occupation and British rule, before achieving self-governance in 1963.

Sabah then joined forces to form the Federation of Malaysia on Sept 16, 1963.

Aaron also reminded the community not to forget the contributions of the figures and generations of the past who devoted their energy, ideas and sacrifices to develop Sabah.

He said the responsibility to take the state further forward now rests on the shoulders of the present generation, especially the people of Sabah.

"Today, that responsibility rests on the shoulders of Sabah's children. The current generation must dare to take Sabah further ahead in education, economy, technology and development, while continuing to protect the state's history, culture and identity," he said.

In 2024, the state government declared Aug 31 as Sabah Day.
