KPDN Steps Up Monitoring Of Halal Logo Use To Prevent Misuse
SEREMBAN, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) is stepping up monitoring of halal logo use in the market, including by suppliers, to ensure no party misuses the certification.
KPDN Deputy Director of Enforcement (Prevention) Aris Mamat said the ministry could take action against traders or companies found using fake, invalid, or expired halal logos.
“However, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) is responsible for verifying the halal status of food products, including chicken, and ensuring that slaughtering methods comply with halal requirements.
“KPDN's role is to verify the use of halal logos by business premises and suppliers. If they are found using fake or expired halal logos, or certificates that have not been renewed, stern action will be taken under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters after launching the 2026 Deepavali Festive Season Maximum Price Scheme (SHMMP) for Negeri Sembilan at a supermarket here today. State KPDN director Muhammad Zahir Mazlan was also present.
On concerns raised by consumers over recent issues involving chicken slaughtering, Aris acknowledged public apprehension but assured that monitoring was conducted regularly.
“Monitoring by KPDN covers all products carrying halal labels in the market, not just chicken products. We are in constant cooperation with JAKIM to ensure adherence to halal regulations,” he said.
He encouraged members of the public to lodge complaints if they suspected halal logo misuse at any premises, including those operating in hidden locations, for further investigation.
Meanwhile, Muhammad Zahir said his department had received seven complaints related to halal matters, while one enforcement case had been recorded in Kuala Pilah to date, involving an offence under Order 8(b) of the Trade Descriptions (Certification and Marking of Halal) Order 2011.
On the SHMMP, he reminded all traders to comply with the laws in force, particularly the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011, throughout the week-long implementation period ending Nov 10.
“Consumers can lodge complaints about price violations or other consumer issues through KPDN's designated channels. We assure them that these complaints will be addressed promptly,” he said.
